Excerpts from her bio on Wikipedia,
Elena Sergejevna Vesnina (Russian: Елена Сергеевна Веснина) (born Lviv, August 1, 1986) is a professional female tennis player from Russia.

Although she had never yet won a WTA singles title or progressed beyond the semi-final stage at WTA level as of April 2008, Vesnina has advanced as high as World No. 41 in the WTA world rankings, has reached the fourth round of one Grand Slam (the Australian Open, 2006) and the third round of two others (The Championships, Wimbledon, 2007 and the Australian Open, 2008), the fourth round of one Tier I WTA event (Miami, 2008) and the third round of another (Miami, 2006), the third round of two Tier II WTA events (Amelia Island, 2006 and again in 2008), five Tier III WTA quarter-finals, two Tier IV WTA semifinals (Forest Hills, 2007 and Tashkent, 2007), three Tier IV WTA quarterfinals, three ITF $75,000 semifinals, and three ITF $50,000 quarter-finals, and has won one ITF $25,000 title and one ITF $10,000 title outright.

She has recorded victories over Top-30 ranked players eleven times in her career to date, with wins over Marion Bartoli, Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Li Na, Daniela Hantuchova, Katarina Srebotnik, Agnes Szavay, Patty Schnyder, and Anabel Medina Garrigues (twice), while they have been currently ranked in the world Top 30.

She is now working with George Akopian who once helped to bring Evgenia Linetskaya up to the WTA World Top 35.

Vesnina is a baseliner who is also proficient at net and can finish rallies from there after getting her opponent out of position. She emphasizes ball placement and strategy. Vesnina's biggest weakness is her serve—Vesnina often double faults once or twice per game in her matches.

Excerpts from her bio on Wikipedia,
Marion Bartoli (born October 2, 1984) a French professional tennis player. She has won three WTA titles, and was runner-up at the 2007 Wimbledon Championships. She has been ranked as high as #9 in the world, and as of March 24, 2008, is the number one female French player. She is currently No. 13 in the world as of August 4, 2008.

Bartoli is known for her unorthodox and intense style of play on the court. She uses two hands on both the forehand and the backhand, and is generally classed as an aggressive and hard-hitting player. She developed her two-handed style on the advice of her father, who is also her coach. He had seen the classic 1992 French Open final in which Monica Seles defeated Steffi Graf, and immediately was inspired to teach the technique to his daughter.

Marion also had trouble with her forehand at the time, so when she made the switch to two hands, it greatly improved. She uses her double-fisted strokes to create sharp angles to open up the court and prefers to take the ball early on groundstrokes and especially returns of serve, usually standing close to the baseline or even inside it during rallies. Her style of play can be most closely compared to that of Seles, who had a strong influence on Bartoli as a young player, though unlike Seles, Bartoli serves right-handed. However, she is not a very good mover and is further inhibited by her two-fisted strokes, which can make her vulnerable to fast all-court players. Bartoli is also known for her unusual serve, in which she uses her wrist to generate speed.

This is her bio on Wikipedia,
Leryn Franco (born 1 March 1982 in Asunción) is a Paraguayan athlete who specializes in the javelin throw. Her personal best throw is 55.38 metres, achieved in May 2007 in Fortaleza.

Franco competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics for Paraguay where she was 21st in Group A and finished 42nd overall. At the 2008 Summer Olympics Franco again competed in the javelin representing Paraguay, where she finished next-to-last at 51st. Had she done her personal best (55.38 m = 181' 8 3/8") she would have placed 36th. During the Games' opening ceremony she garnered some media attention because of her supposed good looks, even though she is brown Indian-looking.

Franco competed for Paraguay at 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished 51st overall.

In 2006 she was runner-up Miss Paraguay. She participated at the Miss Bikini Universe pageant and also has her own calendar which was shot in 2007 by Martin Crespo.

Excerpts from her bio on Wikipedia,
Dara Grace Torres (born April 15, 1967) is an American swimmer. She is the first swimmer from the United States to compete in five Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008. She competed in the Beijing Olympic Games in the 50 meter freestyle, 4×100 medley relay, and 4×100 freestyle relay and won[2] the silver medal in all three of these events.

Torres has won twelve Olympic medals (four gold, four silver, four bronze), five of which she won in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that, at age 33, she was the oldest member of the US Olympic Swim Team. She has also won at least one medal in each of the five Olympics in which she has competed, making her one of only a handful of Olympians to earn medals in five different Games.[3]

On August 1, 2007, at the age of 40 (just 15 months after giving birth to her first child), she won gold in the 100 meter freestyle at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, her 14th win at these events. She then followed that up on August 4 by twice breaking her own American record in the 50 m freestyle, 26 years after she first set the American record at just 15 years old.

Torres grew up in Los Angeles and attended the Westlake School for Girls (now Harvard-Westlake School), and swam under coach Darlene Bible, where she set California Interscholastic Federation records that remain to this day.[4] As a teenager in the 1980s, she swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, in Mission Viejo, California, under Mark Shubert, the 2008 Olympic swimming coach.

Torres was one of the 2000 Olympics swimmers featured in the book Gold in the Water, by P. H. Mullen. It describes Torres's comeback for the 2000 Olympics under coaches Richard Quick and Dick Jochums. She broke the World Record in the Women's 50 Meter Freestyle race three times during the early 1980s.

She subsequently attended the University of Florida, where she received 28 All-American honors.

Torres uses resistance stretching with trainers Anne Tierney and Steve Sierra from Innovative Body Solutions and refers to this training as her "secret weapon" for continued success.[5]

Torres has worked in television as a reporter and announcer for American networks such as NBC, ESPN, TNT, OLN and Fox News Channel. She now hosts the golf show The Clubhouse, on the Resort Sports Network. She is also a sometime model, having appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1994. In 2005, she was elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. [6]

At age 41, Dara Torres returned to the pool to obtain a spot in her fifth Olympic games, unprecedented for an American female swimmer, especially given the fact that she sat out the 1996 and 2004 Olympic games. In fact, she is the first woman in history to swim in the Olympics past the age of 40. The American record in that event is 53.39 seconds. Her Olympic career spans 24 years. On July 5, she qualified for the finals in the 50 m freestyle that were held on July 6. In that semi-final, she broke the American record with a time of 24.38 seconds. On July 6 in the finals she broke that record for the 9th time, setting it at 24.25 seconds and winning the top American women's spot in the 50 m freestyle.[7] Torres' time of 24.25 is .28 seconds off the current world's best in the 50m, set by Australian Libby Trickett at the Australian Olympic Trials in March.

On July 7, 2008, Torres confirmed that she would be pulling out of 100 m freestyle swim for her time at the Beijing Olympics to focus her efforts on the 50 m freestyle. Lacey Nymeyer took over the position from Torres.[8]

On July 30, 2008, at the U.S. swim team's final training in Singapore, Torres, together with Amanda Beard and Natalie Coughlin were elected captains of the U.S. Olympic women’s swimming team.[9]

In order to pre-empt any speculation that she might be taking performance-enhancing drugs, Torres volunteered for an enhanced drug-testing program. She has not been accused of steroids-use.[10]

Torres won silver on August 10, 2008, at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as the anchor position of the US 4×100 meters women's freestyle relay (the fifth time in five tries she has earned an Olympic medal in that event).

On August 17, 2008 at the age of 41 years and 125 days, she won silver in the women's 50 meter freestyle race finishing in 24.07, 0.01 seconds behind the winner, Britta Steffen. About 35 minutes later, she won another silver medal as part of the American 4×100m medley relay team. Her 12 Olympic medals tie the all-time medal record for a female Olympian with fellow American swimmer, Jenny Thompson. Eight of Thompson's medals were gold, compared with Torres' 4. However, Dara has twice as many individual medals (4) as Thompson (2). Torres' split on the 4x100 medley relay (52.27) is the fastest 100 freestyle split in relay history.

Introducing Kara Goucher, a Hot Long Distance Runner Babe

This is hot long distance runner Kara Goucher of Team USA. She hasn't started competing yet but she made big news today when she revealed that a member of Team USA men's basketball team tried to hit her up for her phone number. I'm betting it was Kobe Bryant...

Photobucket

Excerpts from her bio on Wikipedia,
Kara Goucher, (born Kara Grgas on 9 July 1978 in Queens, NY) is an American middle and long-distance runner. Goucher grew up in Duluth, Minnesota where she was known as Kara Wheeler (after her mother's remarriage), and graduated from the University of Colorado in 2001. She later moved to Portland, Oregon with her husband (fellow American runner Adam Goucher) and is coached by American running legend Alberto Salazar.

As a runner for the University of Colorado, Goucher broke out in 2000, becoming the NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 3000 m and 5000 m, the NCAA Cross Country Champion, and also a 5000 m Olympic Trials Finalist (8th).

After college Goucher battled injuries for several years, but then came back strong in 2006. After finishing 2nd in the 5k at the USATF Outdoor Championships in 2006, she set PRs at all distances on the international circuit, running the World “A” Standard in the 1500 m, 5000 m, and 10000 m. She finished third in 3000 metres at the 2006 IAAF World Cup in a new personal best time of 8 minutes 41.42 seconds. Her 3k time led the nation and her 10k time ranks her as the 2nd fastest American woman of all-time. At the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan she won the bronze medal in the women's 10,000 m event.

In September 2007, she won the Great North Run in 1:06:57, the fastest woman's half-marathon time of the year, setting a new American best time[1] at the distance and beating marathon world record-holder Paula Radcliffe, on the latter's comeback from pregnancy and injury.[2] The half-marathon was Goucher's first competitive race longer than 10k.

Goucher kicked off 2008 with a win in the prestigious Millrose Games mile with a PR of 4:36:03. At the 2008 Prefontaine Classic track meet in Eugene, Oregon, USA, Goucher ran the 5000 m, the same race as the World Record attempt by Meseret Defar. Goucher ran well to place 3rd behind Defar and Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot in her second fastest ever time of 14m58.10s. Defar failed in her attempt but won the race in 14m38.73s.

Goucher is a member of the Nike Oregon Project, a project designed to improve standards in American Distance running. There she trains with fellow athletes Galen Rupp, her husband Adam Goucher, Josh Rohatinsky and Amy Yoder-Begley.

Goucher raced in the USATF Championships and Olympic Trials on June 27, 2008, in the 5000 m and the 10000 m. The championships were held at Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon. Goucher already had the Olympic A Standard, but achieved it again, recording 31:37.72 at 10000 m, finishing second behind American record-holder Shalane Flanagan's 31:34.81. In the 5000 m, Goucher won her semi final heat with a time of 15:32.32, and won the final race with a time of 15:01.02.[3].

Goucher will race in both the 5000m and 10000m in the Bejing 2008 Summer Olympics.

Excerpts from her bio on Wikipedia,
Stephanie Rice (born 17 June 1988 in Brisbane, Queensland) is an Australian swimmer. She currently holds the world record in the 200 m and 400 m individual medley as of August 13, 2008, and won three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Rice is trained by Michael Bohl from the St Peters Western Swimming Club in Brisbane.

Rice was the gold medalist in the 200 metres Individual Medley at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia where she defeated Olympians Brooke Hanson and Lara Carroll to claim the gold medal in the event in a time of 2:12.90, a personal best by 1.19 sec. She also won the 400m individual medley.

At the 2007 Melbourne World Championships she won a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2 minutes 11.42 seconds, breaking the previous Australian record by a second. American Katie Hoff won the gold in 2:10.13, with Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe in second place. Rice once again placed third, earning her second bronze medal in the 400m individual medley final. In a new personal best time Rice finished in 4:41.19, taking .54 sec off her previous best.

Rice continued her strong performance, setting a new personal best time in the 400m individual medley at an Italian meet in June 2007. Rice went a 4:40.79, edging closer to the elusive 4:40 barrier in the event. At the 2007 Japanese Open Championships, Rice smashed her personal best time in the 400m individual medley and finally cracked the 4:40 barrier. In placing second to Zimbabwean champion Kirsty Coventry, Rice set a new Australian and Commonwealth record of 4:37.18—a personal best by 3.61 sec.[citation needed]

At the 2008 Australian Olympic trials, Rice broke the world record in the 400 m individual medley. Rice stopped the clock at 4 minutes 31.46 seconds, 1.43 seconds off American Katie Hoff's mark of 4:32.89.[4] On June 29, 2008, at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Hoff retook the world record from Rice with a time of 4:31.12. Rice claimed her second world record of the meet, when she broke the 200 m individual medley world record, clocking 2 minutes 8.92 seconds to slash almost a full second off the previous record held by China's Wu Yanyan.[5]

At the at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Rice won her first-ever Olympic medal, Australia's first gold medal of the games and its 400th summer Olympic medal[6], winning the 400m individual medley in a time of 4 minutes 29.45 seconds. In the process she reclaimed the world record from Hoff bettering the mark by 1.67 seconds, thus becoming the first woman to break the 4:30 in the event, (Kirsty Coventry also went under 4:30 in taking the silver). Her second gold medal of the games came on August 13 in the 200m individual medley with a new world record time of 2 minutes 8.34 seconds. Rice prevailed after being neck and neck with Coventry, who also went under the old world record[7].

The athlete was romantically linked with fellow Australian swimmer and 50m freestyle world record holder Eamon Sullivan; they ended their 2 year relationship in July 2008, just prior to the Beijing Olympics.[8]
